Where did you get that hair????

So I got into the elevator at my dentist office on Friday afternoon. When I heard "where did you get all that hair girl" hmmmm My parents I said. Wow the man said "do you ever straighten it", yes I do but it takes over 4hrs I replied. Wow, so what does your boyfriend think of it? he says. So now I am thinking in my head he is trying to pick me up. He loves it, I replied, Why whats wrong with my hair? He replies oh nothing I really love it, I really do. Well thank you I said and bye. He tried to say something else but I ignored him.

I find that people are really drawn to my hair. I had an old gentleman tell me how much it reminded him of his young years. I think its the wildness and the natural beauty of the hair that draws them. Hey somedays I love my hair so much but there are days I want to cut it or flat iron it straight. Winter is the hardest for me because I cant wear a hat in order to do so I have to wash it and put it in a ponytail while its wet. I have to blow dry it in the ponytail its a tough job this hair. Lots of people say hey I wished I had your hair, hmmmmm no you dont I usually say. But you know how it is, we always want something we don't have.

Black women are not taught to embrace their natural hair from the early years parents use relaxers to straighten the hair. Honestly I don't like to see young girls with relax hair I think with the right products the hair can be manageable.

Natural hair is soooooooooo beautiful, embrace what you got and work with it.

The making of Curlylox.com

I am Black, Chinese and Indian parents are Jamaican and Trinidadian from I can remember my hair was a huge problem. The thickest, the fine curls made it hard to manage, honestly the only time it was manageable was when it was being washed and even then it was a task in itself. I honestly remember as a child when my mother would say "Time to wash your hair Toya" I would run and hide. LOL But my brother Wayne would always come and find me and bring me to my mom cause like most older brother's he loved to watch his little sister get in trouble. But when I started to bawl he would feel so sorry for me that he would sit and hold my hand.

One morning my father had to comb my hair for school (I was in grade 1) as my mom was away on a trip. It was such an terrifying experience he couldn't get my hair in a ponytail, he tried his best and got half of the hair in a ponytail. When I got to school the teacher felt so bad for me that she combed my hair in front of the whole class. I remember her Mrs. Hicklings calling all the other teachers to show them how thick and plentiful my hair was. All the kids laughing saying I had a big head. Wish I could see some of those classmates now cause I don't have a big head just plenty of hair. LOL

I am sure every curly hair person goes through the same trials. The frizzy, dryness, lack of products especially if you are bi/multiracial. That is one of the few things that lead me to start www.curlylox.com. Let me tell you how it all began.

I am an entrepreneur and like most entrepreneurs I have alot of ideas, ask my friends they will tell you, I can come up with an idea in no time. A few of the many ideas I had were to start a juice bar, a towel company, social networking (everyone is trying this one) and the list goes on. I have never been truly happy at anyone of my jobs I don't like being on anyone's time but my own,(for example my boss saying my lunch time is at 12 what if I am not hungry at 12?? I still got to go then starve the rest of the day).

In January 2007 my father died in Jamaica, the week leading up to his funeral I met in a life changing car accident. The death of my father along with the accident put my life in perspective immediately. I asked myself why haven't I ventured out and tried one my many ideas, came down to this, I wasn't passionate about any of them.

One day while reading a magazine I discovered a product called "Mixed Chicks." I went on their website the products seemed good, said it was for mixed chicks like the name so I sent away for some samples, I got the samples and the product was good in my hair, made it very manageable. I called up the company and told them that I was interested in selling their product line. They asked, "What's the name of your company?" I paused for a few seconds as I didn't have a company name, logo or even a full idea of what I was going to do. The name Curlylox came out of my mouth, Curlylox I said with confidence. The lady on the other end of the phone said "That is a really cute name" she agreed to have me sell her product. In the next few days after my initial contact with Mixed Chicks, I registered the company (thanks to my girl Patricia for helping with this). Thanks to my friend Mike for hooking me up with his webdesigner and thanks to Liz who created the Curlylox logo she is so talented.

Hair is something I know about because I live it everyday and I can relate to curly hair people. I found my passion!!!!
